FAQs on Shoulder Pain

The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in the body. It moves the shoulder forward and backward; allows the arm to move in a circular motion; and also allows the arms to move up and away from the body. This mobility, however, means the shoulder can be injured by a variety of tasks and actions. Certain health issues are also likely to affect the joint.

Common causes of shoulder pain include:

  • Manual labor
  • Sports accidents
  • Daily repetitive movements
  • Tendinitis
  • Arthritis
  • Torn cartilage
  • Torn rotator cuff

People are more likely to experience problems with their shoulders with age (especially after age 60.) Over time, the soft tissues surrounding the shoulder tend to degenerate, making them more prone to injury.

This is not to say that young people cannot suffer a shoulder injury. Sports players and individuals who work out often are also highly likely to experience an injury due to a fall, hit, tackle, bad posture, and/or other workout issues.

Any shoulder pain that presents suddenly and without obvious cause needs to be called in immediately. This type of pain may actually be a sign of a heart attack.

Most often, however, shoulder pain will develop following an injury of some sort. It’s important to go to an emergency room if you experience bleeding or swelling as a result of being injured.

A non-emergency doctor or specialist should be contacted if you experience an inability to move your shoulder; lasting bruising; heat and tenderness around the joint; or pain that persists beyond a few weeks of home treatment.

Depending on the nature and cause of your shoulder pain, doctors may suggest a range of treatment options, including but not limited to:

  • Rest and icing the affected area
  • Physical or occupational therapy
  • A sling or shoulder immobilizer
  • Surgery
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications
  • Corticosteroids

We provide a customized combination of chiropractic, physical therapy, and/or rehabilitative services designed specifically for your issue or injury. Our wide variety of treatment modalities can reduce joint restrictions, increase joint mobility, and strengthen weakened muscles that are affecting your mobility and health.

During each visit, no matter what your care program looks like, you will meet with your doctor for evaluation and treatment, then move on to prescribed physical therapy protocols in our state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility. These supervised protocols will gradually intensify to recondition and strengthen weakened/injured areas, which prevents exacerbation and recurrence of your shoulder pain.
