FAQs on Hip Pain
Hip pain is a common complaint that can be caused by a wide variety of problems, including dysfunctions in the joint or the surrounding pelvic bones, muscles, and ligaments. Specific causes of hip pain include but are not limited to:
- Problems and degeneration of the joint itself (either due to injury or natural wear and tear)
- Muscle, ligament, tendon, and other tissue tears and injury
- Pinched nerves
- Lower back problems
- Certain diseases and health issues, including dislocations, fractures, arthritis and osteoarthritis
When you first feel hip pain, it’s often worth trying a few self-care tips at home. That means doing the following:
- Get lots of rest
- Avoid repetitive movements that put pressure on the hips (i.e. bending up and down)
- Try not to sleep on the affected side of your hips
- Avoid prolonged sitting
- Use over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve)
- Alternate between icing and heat packs to ease the pain and lessen inflammation
If, however, self-care treatments don't help, make an appointment with your doctor. Additionally, you should seek immediate medical attention if you experience hip pain following an injury; if you feel pain and lose the ability to move a leg or bear weight; if you experience intense swelling of the pained area; and/or if any signs of infection develop (i.e. fever, chills, redness).
Chiropractors are specialists in dealing with all joints throughout the body. Chiropractors are able to work directly with the hip and spine, allowing them to look for physical anomalies that may be causing your pain. Chiropractors are often able to identify problems not just in the hips, but in nearby muscles and musculoskeletal alignments. This allows them to target the sources of pain directly, rather than treating the affected area(s) alone.
When visiting a chiropractor, you can expect to undergo a physical examination of the spine, pelvis, hip joint, knees, and so forth to determine the actual source of your pain. Chiropractors will also evaluate your gait and posture for additional clues and insight into your musculoskeletal health. Based on the findings, a chiropractor may then create a personalized care plan that includes chiropractic adjustments, exercises, posture advice and stretching to try to address your symptoms and improve your function and mobility.
Physical therapy allows a patient to undergo a targeted stretching program that works in tandem with chiropractic adjustments. PT exercises will help increase the range of motion of the hips and strengthen its supporting muscles, both of which can help speed up the healing process and promote a healthier musculoskeletal structure overall.
We take the best of chiropractor and physical therapy care and combine them in a customized treatment plan designed specifically for the type of injury or condition each patient has.
During each visit, you will meet with your doctor for evaluation and treatment, then move on to prescribed physical therapy protocols in our state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility. These supervised protocols will gradually intensify to recondition and strengthen weakened/injured areas, which prevents exacerbation and recurrence of your hip pain.
